OPTO History - OPTO 2024: Prague

The history of the OPTO conferences in Poland dates back to 2005 when the SPIE International Congress on Optics and Electronics was held in Wrocław. The primary idea behind the meeting was to gather young scientists from all Polish SPIE Student Chapters and SPIE members from all over the world. Just the next year the conference formula expanded to all OSA Student Chapters from Poland and other OSA members (International OSA/SPIE Student Chapters Meeting, Wrocław, 2006). Since then, it became an annual event held each year in a different polish city. The conference is organized each year by OSA & SPIE Student Chapters from the host city.

OPTO 2022: Warsaw (July 18-21)

(XVII International SPIE and OPTICA Student Chapter Meeting) In 2022, first time after the pandemic difficulties, the tradition of OPTO conference was recovered in stationary form. OPTO 2022 conference photos.

OPTO 2021: Wrocław (July 1-4)

(XVI International SPIE Student Chapter Meeting) In 2021, regardless of the pandemic difficulties, the tradition of annual meetings was brought back to where it all began in a new online form.

OPTO 2020: Gdańsk (July 1-4)

(XV International SPIE Student Chapter Meeting) 2020 was not the easiest year. That is why it seemed all the more important to continue the tradition started in 2005 in Wrocław. Therefore, OPTO 2020, organized by Gdansk Univ. Of Technology Student Chapter, was moved online.

OPTO 2014: Gdańsk (July 1-5)

(IX International SPIE Student Chapter Meeting) OPTO-Meeting for Young Researchers & 9th International SPIE Student Chapter Meeting 2014 conference took place at the Gdańsk University of Technology, Gdańsk (Poland). The conference lasted five days, between 1st and 5th July 2014. This event gathered the OSA & SPIE student members from Poland and other countries. Twelve of the participants gave an oral presentation and sixteen young scientists presented a poster. During the conference, we could attend among others the lecture about smart structures and fiber optics conducted by Prof. Brian Culshaw and the lecture by Prof. Ibrahim Abdulhalim about biomedical optical imaging assisted by liquid crystal devices.

OPTO 2013: Toruń (July 3-7)

(VIII International SPIE Students’ Chapters Meeting) Between 3rd and 7th of July 2013 OSA & SPIE Student Chapters from Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń (Poland) organized the OPTO-Meeting for Young Researchers & 8th International SPIE Student Chapters Meeting 2013 conference and 14th European International OSA Network of Students (IONS-14) as the next door event. The invited speakers’ list included Prof. Susanna Marcos, Prof. David Sampson, Prof. Krzysztof Palczewski, and Michalina Góra Ph.D. OPTO2013 was one of the biggest events in the history of OPTO Conferences gathering more than 70 participants. The audience could attend 23 oral presentations and participate in discussions with 28 poster authors. The range of topic was very wide including a strong accent on vision optics, optical coherence tomography, Fourier transform spectroscopy, microscopy, and material science.
